Chapter 17

The happiest place on earth

(Disney, 1955)

There was nothing unusual about the following day. Ryan woke up with a start. He was getting late for work. He despised being late to the office even though he was late every day. He tried to sit up. His body was numb.

The familiar pain woke him up to reality. He stared at the blank ceiling. The blinding light in the room reminded him of last night. Nour was the light at the end of the tunnel. The unusual thing about this morning was he finally smiled.

Today, he felt different. He felt happy, tense, nervous, confident, anxious, bewildered, and alive. It was like a smorgasbord of emotions swirling around in his head. He wondered if Nour would come through or if it had been the weed talking. His phone buzzed. It was a text from Nour.

You’re in. Pitch on Friday. New agency announcement on Monday.

The reality suddenly struck him. His stomach churned. He felt like he was going to throw up. He knew it was a mere formality if Sphinx was squeezing Ryan in at the last minute. He would have to present something out of this world to change their minds.

A win would be monumental. A big piece that would fit in the ‘beautiful revenge’ puzzle. A lesson Todd and Kate would never forget. It was the reason why he wanted to fight when he could barely stand. And, in some twisted, morbid way, it was the reason for him to live now. Ryan looked at the message again. The most important and urgent task was getting a team to deliver a pitch-winning campaign in 48 hours.

After almost a decade at Sun, the only experts he could trust were the ones on his team. The dilemma was they must have worked on the same pitch with Kate. He needed to get rid of Kate and invite the team over to Head Lion. He sent a message to Kate, letting her know that he was traveling out of town with Max to get some tests done. He then sent a text to Gina.

Can you get the squad to come over and meet me —today at 7 pm?

The reply was almost instantaneous.

Anything for you, Guru! Hugs.

Ryan smiled.

The churn in his stomach had stopped, and now he wanted some coffee the same way he wanted his Wi-Fi signals: strong. At 7 pm, there was a knock at the door. Ryan’s former team group hugged him. Andy opened a bottle of Patrón, Ryan’s favorite tequila. Gina pushed Ryan’s wheelchair and moved the party to the balcony with a breathtaking view of the lake. Fish did the honors as he rolled up a joint, proudly telling everyone that the weed was from Pakistan. Ryan declined but let them have it. He wanted them to relax before dropping the bomb. Fish finally asked the most important question of the evening.

“Why are we here, Guru?”

“You missed us?” Gina smiled.

“You need help?” Fish looked at Andy.

“Yes, I need your help.”

“Anything for you, Guru.
